Library Expansion
Library still growing!
The expansion of the library's physical building is complete. Now, the focus is on the outdoor space on the east side of the building. A new Community Garden, outdoor play spaces, and other wonderful features are being planned. Th
February 24, 2013 update
Thank you to everyone who celebrated the library's expansion at our grand reopening event! It was great to see the over 500 people that made it to our event!
January 10, 2013 Update
What are we doing while we're closed, you ask?
Although this space looks fairly open and empty, we know there are a lot of books and other materials we need to add to this space. Right now we're spending a lot of time looking at the library's collection and trying to determine where to put everything!
January 4, 2013 Update
A new year, a new library! Crews have moved from the expansion part of the project into the renovation phase.
This picture shows what formerly served as the library circulation desk. This space will now hold our media collection, a small office, and a self-check station.
December 26, 2012 Update
How did you spend your holidays? Our staff prepped for some serious work in the new space. Instead of sugar plum fairies, we've had dreams of books and shelves. Thankfully, most of the difficult work was done by local Bayfield High School students (yay for strong teens!)
December 13, 2012 Update
Crews are about to wrap up all the interior work on the new space.
Next week the carpet should be installed in the new area.
December 3, 2012 Update
The new part of the library is so close to being done!
The lack of snow has been horrible for our drought, but has also helped crews keep going!
November 6, 2012 Update
This week work continues on the masonry outside the library. Also, fire suppression work is being done. Inside, crews are starting to hang drywall and will soon set the storefront (window) frames.
By next week, crews will be doing some electrical work, which will unfortunately impact our patrons. On Tuesday, November 13, the library will be closed from 9am until 2pm, as the power will be off. The library will reopen at 2pm that day. Sorry for the inconvenience!
October 29, 2012 Update
Crews are continuing to impress us, as they move forward with the expansion project. Currently, the exterior of the building is taking on a new look, as the outside masonry starts. Inside, crews continue to work on the new community room space and adult reading space. We will continue to post details of this work here, and on our Facebook page:
October 21, 2012 Update
Work is happening on the library's roof right now. Crews used a lift to hoist roof materials to the top of the expansion portion of the project.
Inside the library, teens are again invited to help decorate another portion of the temporary wall. The second "Paint My Wall" activity will happen on Thursday, November 1 at 3:30pm. *Space is limited, so sign up today!
October 15, 2012 Update
What a difference a few days can make! With steel framing up, crews are already starting to work on the electrical and plumbing rough-in. Next week, masonary work will start.
Inside the library, work is just about finished on the staff work area. By the end of the month, library staff should be able to start moving from the community meeting room into the new work area.
October 11, 2012 Update
The roof is currently being constructed on the new library addition. This week crews will finish detailing the joist and deck. They will also finish the peirs and canopy. Under that new roof, work is being done on steel stud framing which will lead to interior wall framing next week.
Inside, crews are completing the finishing touches on the staff work area, which should be done in the next few weeks.
September 27, 2012 Update
Crews are working on sewer lines this week, which means the library's front lawn and sidewalks had to be dug up. A temporary sidewalk was added this morning, but not after a few patrons had to find "creative" entry into the building! Thankfully, Joe Simon and his crew worked quickly, and the library again has a safe and easy way to enter the building.
September 17, 2012 Update
It's amazing to see the progress on our library expansion. Structural steel is already being erected to form the addition's outer walls. What this picture doesn't show is the library's back staff room, which is nearing completion. Workers will install doors and hardware in the staff area this week.
Officials say the work is moving along nicely, with just a few minor setbacks. The projected completion is still expected to be the first part of 2013 (end of January/ beginning of February).
September 5, 2012 Update
Inside the library, we've had a lovely plywood wall jutting out near the book shelves. Just last week, we were told we could go ahead and color on it (why didn't we think of it sooner?). The kids had a lot of fun "decorating" this past week. This morning, though, workers took down the temporary wall, as they have completed most of the work in the back staff area. FCI has efficiently kept the project on task, and things are moving along!
Outside the library, work is still being done on the slab for the addition. Next week, expect to see some steel beams erected for the future walls.
Meanwhile, we are still not officially using our back staff work area, so we ask that patrons bring their books inside the library during the day. By the end of next week, we will most likley have the book drop functioning at all times! Thank you for your patience through this; we appreciate all your support.
August 24, 2012 Update
The outline of the expansion project is now visible, with the foundation walls poured. Looking at this view, it seems like such a small addition! But, according to our experts "just wait until the walls are up!" The 4,000 square-foot addition will seem larger once the walls are constructed. First, workers are removing the rocks along the outer east wall of the current building, and other work needs to be completed.
Inside the library, workers are putting up drywall in the back staff area. This section of the renovation should be done by mid-September. In the meantime, accessing our overnight book drop has been limited (we don't want library staff to get in the way!), so we are asking patrons to bring their items into the library during our regular hours. The book drop is OPEN overnight, when the library is closed. Sorry for the inconvenience!
August 8, 2012 Update
The Bayfield High School Wolverines made our moving day a lot easier on Friday, August 3. It took these members of the team less than 2 hours to load 3 pickups and a trailer, and then unload them in a storage area. Coach Gary Hyde has obviously been training them well! Thank you, Coach Hyde, and all the players that helped.
This week, the library's back room is being renovated. That portion of the project will last about six weeks. Please bear with us as we work through this part of the project. We may close our dropbox during regular business hours, so we are encouraging patrons to bring their items into the library to return them.
Outside, the fittings are being poured in the expansion area, and next week, walls will be poured.
July 31, 2012 Update
This week footings are being formed, which takes a little while. Also, we are meeting with our interior decorator to go over the furniture plan. We are going to repurpose as much furniture as possible in this project, which will reduce waste and cut down on costs. Also, on Friday, August 3, members of the Bayfield High School football team will be helping our staff move into a temporary work area (the "old" meeting room). Thank you, BHS Wolverines!
July 26, 2012 Update
The library project continues to be interesting to watch! Soon, the library will have a new access route to our ramp. Currently, a fence around the library is close to the edge of our access ramp, so we are adding a temporary sidewalk to help out with that!

Work this week
Trenches are being dug, compacting work is being done, and soon the exterior foundation work begins! Also, as mentioned before, work is being done on the temporary sidewalk that will connect to the base of the handicap ramp.
Landscape Architect and/or Designer wanted
The Lavenia McCoy Public Library is seeking a qualified landscape architect and/or designer to create a plan for the library’s landscaping.
Proposals are due at the library no later than August 1, 2012.

July 18, 2012 update
Work began Monday, July 16 with a fence built around the construction site. By Wednesday, July 18, the bulldozer was on site and dirt officially started moving!
July 11, 2012 update
Work starting soon
In June, the library held a groundbreaking ceremony (see below) and that has all of us asking, "When will the work begin?" The project officially starts this month, and a lot of the behind-the-scenes activity has increased this past week. We expect to see more of the tangible work later this month. Keep checking our website for more information. The picture above shows how the library will look once it's finished. By the early part of 2013, your library will look a lot different than it does today!

Library Groundbreaking Ceremony, June 26, 2012
On Tuesday, June 26, 2012, the ceremonial dirt was turned as the board of trustees and the library director dug their shovels into the future home of the library's expansion. The project will start in July, with a possible completion in January 2013. Keep checking back here for more details on this exciting project!
June, 2012 update
Summer is here and the library's expansion project continues to move forward. As a library staff, we are realizing just how quickly the project is approaching. We expect to break ground this summer, so we are already making preparations for the construction project. The library is no longer accepting donations of books, CD's, movies, etc., as we will be out of storage space during the expansion project. Also, the library's meeting room will NOT be avaiable after August 1, 2012. We have a list of other options at the library (give us a call at 884-2222 or stop by and we can pass along the information). Thank you for your support and understanding during this process!
April, 2012 update
The library's expansion project is moving forward! In April, the library's board of trustees hired FCI Constructors, Inc. to act as general manager on the project. Owner's Representative, Jim Philippon, is working closely with FCI and with Humphries/Poli architects to keep the project moving along. Architect Dennis Humphries presented his latest schematic design at the April library board meeting. To see the design, click here:
